Psalms 111-114 -
Hallelujah! I give thanks to God with everything I’ve got--Wherever good people gather, and in the congregation, God’s works are so great, worth a life-time of study--endless enjoyment...This God of Grace, this God of Love...a generosity that never runs dry.
Sunrise breaks through the darkness for good people-- God’s grace and mercy and justice! The good person is generous and lends lavishly; a sterling and solid and lasting reputation. Unfazed by rumor and gossip, heart ready, trusting in God, Spirit-firm, unperturbed. Ever blessed, relaxed among enemies. they lavish gifts on the poor--a generosity that goes on, and on, and on.
Matthew 6:1 - 6:18 -
Be especially careful when you you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It ought to be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding. When you do something for someone else, don’t draw attention to yourself. When you help someone out, don’t think about how it looks. Just do it--quietly and unobtrusively. And when you come before God, don’t turn that into a theatrical production either. Find a quiet place so that you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God and you will begin to sense his grace.
In prayer, there is a connection between what God does and what you do...
When you practice appetite-denying discipline to better concentrate on God, don’t make a production out of it...If you “go into training” inwardly, act normal outwardly.
